Missing Data

The New York Times reports that Sex Infections are Found in a Quarter of Teenage Girls .

I assume that most of these girls are having sex with boys, and that teenage boys are more promiscuous than the girls. Which makes me wonder, what is the rate of sex infections in teenage boys? Surely it must be greater than 25%.

Dark

I volunteered at a greyhound adoption event today and the other volunteers lamented the plight of the black hound. Black dogs are difficult to place into forever homes and may languish in kennels for years.

A researcher presented data this week about a genome study. He described results from three populations, Chinese, Black African and Caucasian (his words). He presented this data as a triangle, with Caucasians at the top of the pyramid.

When I place my palms facing down at an automated faucet (dark skin facing the sensor) the water does not run. When I place my hands palms up (light skin facing the sensor) the water runs.

Random non sequiters or related dark matter?

My First Macro

My First Macro
Originally uploaded by nanodudek
I have always wondered how to use the macro setting on my camera.

The macro icon on the wheel is a little flower, indicating that if you want to take pictures of little flowers, you should choose the little flower setting. I have tried this on numerous occasions, never with any luck.

Today the stars were in alignment because I was able to snap a macro photo of this purple crocus. I had to crop out the ugly part, but I am still thrilled that the leaf's edge is crisp, the veins are sharp and the background has that fancy, artsy blurry effect.

I also stretched the limits of the macro little flower setting by taking pictures of little things besides flowers. It was fun. Visit my flickr page to see more.

Dear Lala,

You are my sweet neighbor dog. I love hearing your thumping tail through the ceiling and I adore your thudding as you stamp up the stairs. My favorite thing about summer is coming home on my bicycle and seeing you waiting in the yard. Be healthy and live long.

With love,
Your neighbor human

Sunday Grocery Musings

  • What is it about olive bars that makes people so uptight and competitive?
  • Canadian grocery stores do not sell pickles in the refrigerated section.
  • Pickles are only 10 calories each.
  • I have become the type of person who buys gourmet six dollar crackers.
  • Pecans cost 50% more than walnuts. Why?
  • Canada offers a $0.05 refund on juice cartons but not on milk cartons.
  • Potato chips are available in crazy flavors these days (ketchup, dill pickle, curry, chili and lime, garlic).
  • Today I bought Chips Ahoy cookies, which are a favorite from my childhood. I am going to microwave them for 5 seconds and eat them with tea.
  • Dolmas are available in a can.
  • There are 4 alternatives to cow's milk: goat's milk, soy milk, rice milk and almond milk.
  • When did pomelos become popular?
  • One reason I eat less cereal and more omelettes, nuts, oatmeal and cream of wheat for breakfast lately is because cereal in Canada is depressingly costly. Today I got lucky; my favorite cereal was on sale, marked down from $5.79 to $3.00.
  • My cloth market bags save about 3 plastic bags per cloth bag, depending on how they are loaded.
What are your grocery store musings, tips, tricks, and pet peeves?
